Will Steel Book Storage Racks Undergo Oxidation?
Sep 20, 2026
Many people worry that Steel Book Storage Racks will rust and oxidize. In fact, qualified Steel Book Storage Racks have strong anti-oxidation and anti-rust capabilities. They hardly suffer oxidation and rusting under normal indoor conditions. Oxidation only occurs on products with poor craftsmanship, damaged surface layers or in extremely harsh environments. The core protection comes from the multi-stage anti-corrosion process of Steel Book Storage Racks.
High-quality Steel Book Storage Racks are made of premium cold-rolled steel sheets. Before leaving the factory, the steel sheets go through complete anti-corrosion pretreatment to eliminate oxidation risks fundamentally. First, oil stains, rust and impurities are removed via degreasing and pickling, forming a dense phosphating film. This film improves coating adhesion and anti-corrosion performance. Then high-temperature electrostatic powder spraying is applied to cover the steel sheet with a uniform and full epoxy powder coating. After high-temperature curing, the coating bonds tightly with steel sheets and forms a fully sealed protective layer, isolating oxygen, moisture and air from the base material and cutting off essential conditions for steel oxidation and rusting.
In conventional indoor environments, whether dry northern rooms or well-ventilated homes, offices and campuses in southern China with mild temperature and humidity and no corrosive substances, the intact powder coating protects steel sheets permanently. No oxidation, rusting or peeling will occur, and the service life can exceed 10 years, far longer than wooden bookshelves. Even if they get slightly wet or splashed with water occasionally, wiping them dry promptly will not impair the protective layer, so oxidation concerns are unnecessary.
There are two main scenarios where Steel Book Storage Racks develop oxidation and rust. The first one is damage to the protective coating. When the powder coating falls off due to sharp scraping, violent impacts or heavy bumps, the exposed steel substrate will react with oxygen and moisture in the air and gradually produce rust. The smaller the damaged area and the drier the environment, the slower the oxidation spreads. Large damaged areas will accelerate rust expansion. The second scenario is long-term exposure to extreme environments, such as outdoor rainy areas, persistently wet basements, coastal high salt spray zones or industrial spaces with acid and alkali corrosive gas. Even intact coatings will age and peel under long-term erosion, leading to oxidation of steel sheets.
Low-cost inferior Steel Book Storage Racks are more prone to oxidation and rust. Manufacturers of such products skip pickling and phosphating processes and only apply simple thin paint. The coating has insufficient thickness and poor adhesion, so it easily cracks and peels after use. Water vapor penetrates quickly and causes oxidation and rust of internal steel sheets, greatly shortening service life.
During daily use, avoid damaging the coating of Steel Book Storage Racks. Keep ventilation and wipe water stains promptly in humid conditions to prevent oxidation and rust. If local coating damage occurs, use a touch-up paint pen to seal the exposed area in time and stop oxidation from spreading, ensuring long-term stable performance of the racks.
